The property was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in the medieval vernacular style for wine importer Ernest Blackburn. Completed in 1903 and covering , it is considered one of Lutyens best private houses. Laid out in a H-shape, it has a Cotswolds manor style about it, but using locally mined course-stone which has weathered quickly to give the house externally a 16th-century look. The house consists of two storeys plus an attic, with two wings, to provide 9 bedrooms of accommodation.
